Frequently Asked

What is bias tape?

All fabric has a grain to it - the way the threads run.  If you cut on the straight grain, you are cutting so the threads run straight.  If you cut on the bias, you're cutting the threads on a 45 degree angle.  Cutting on the angle allows the fibers to stretch more and gives you a nice stretch to your bias tape which is great for projects like curves, garments, or hair bows!

What's the difference between bias tape and quilt binding?

Bias Tape is when the strips of fabric that have been cut on the bias are then folded in half towards the middle.  Double fold bias is folded in half again.

Bias Quilt Binding are strips cut on the bias that are folded in half once, top to bottom.  This is traditionally used for quilt binding but also can be used in other projects.

How many yards of binding should I order for my quilt?

To calculate how many yards you need, first add up the length of all four sides of your quilt.  Then add 18 inches (to allow room for mitered corners and joining your ends) and divide your total by 36 (36 inches per yard).  That will give you the number of yards you'll need!
For example, my quilt is 60 inches on each side.  So 60 + 60 + 60 + 60 = 240.  240 + 18 = 258.  258 divided by 36 = 7.17 so I would need 8 yards of binding.
