3 Easy Bias Binding Sewing Projects

You’ve finished your quilt.  You’ve got some binding left – what to do with it?  Or maybe you have a whole bunch of scraps of binding and want to use them to make something AWESOME!

Here are three easy sewing projects to use up your extra binding, that AREN’T binding a quilt.

Idea #1: Make a quilt coat!

It’s getting hotter here in NC while I type this but that makes it the perfect time to start thinking about quilt coats!  Because, if you’re like me, it will take you a couple months to actually get it finished, haha!  I start thinking about one each winter and then never get it finished before the weather turns warm again.  But this year, ya’ll I am READY for quilt coat season.

Disclaimer – I used a premade quilt, which made putting this Tamarack jacket together even easier.

Depending on your pattern, quilt coats use 10-12 yards of bias binding.  Have a bunch of scrap pieces leftover?  Sew them all together for a scrappy binding and you’re all set!

Coat pattern – Tamarack Coat with the Hood add on from Grainline Studio.  Pattern seemed to be true to size for me (I’m a size 10/medium top and cut a a size 10 in the pattern).  I did add some additional length in the body and arms since I’m long waisted.  Binding shown is Happiest Dots in Navy.

2. The Allspice Apron from Hey June Handmade

This checks all the boxes for me – functional, beautiful and the pattern is free!  If you have a yard of fabric and 5-6 yards of binding, you’re ready to go!  A friend of mine recently made this apron with some matching tea towels as a bridal shower gift and I thought that was so sweet!

3. The Emmerson Bag from The Blanket Statement

This was the very first handbag I ever made and Erin’s pattern made it so easy!  It’s perfect for a beginner and only takes 1-2 yards of bias binding.  Great for using up your bias binding stash!

I use this bag every day and love it.  It’s the perfect size for my wallet, phone and keys and keeps my hands free to carry all of my children’sjunk, I mean,  treasures.
